This Imperial Japanese map case is a typical army/navy issue dispatch case used for maps, compass, pencils and plotting instruments. Constructed from age-darkened cowhide, the case is approximately 19 ½ cm in height, 14 ½ cm wide, and can expand to 5 ½ cm thick if full. A fold-over flap is to its forward face. The fold-over flap has the outline of a five-pointed star stitched to its base, beneath which is sewn a single-buttonholed leather tab. The leather tab passes through a horizontal leather loop riveted to the body of the case and into a brass stud beneath it. There are two pencil holders stitched to the exterior of the case. The interior is one section and the inside of the flap has some Japanese lettering. The reverse of the case is complete with its one original leather belt attachment strap. The belt is constructed from thick age-darkened cowhide with a steel buckle. 6 ½ cm wide and 85cm long (34 ½ “) There is a leather tab holding a steel square hook to one side of the belt, and a leather strap holding the case on the other. The stitching on both tabs is coming loose, but both are still intact. There are some age related marks to the front of the case. A lovely collectors piece. The price includes U.K. delivery. L 354.
