ON HOLD FOR CUSTOMER ### NEW LISTING 2/3/15 ### WW1 GERMAN WW1 GERMAN TRENCH KNIFE
Overall good condition....
Has a fascinating really "BEEN THERE" appearance of having been amongst the sandbags, mud, and machine gun emplacements of a WW1 German Trench...a knife with the real "Marks Of History"
Very nicely crafted, probably in a field work shop by the way the item has been made; especially considering the bayonet blade has been thinned down to easily slide into a boot, pack, or some other item of field kit, the way a new edge has been reground and sharpened, and the way the knife balances by the rivet nearest the guard, and the way the pomell guard and hilt have been reworked from a bayonet to a knife hilt.
No sheath but probably never had one. The slimmed down blade was probably desinged to slip into a boot, pack, or some other item of kit.At the most the blade would have been wrapped in a piece of cloth, used by various European Soldiers, Sikhs, and others.
Made from a German SEITENGEWEHR M1884/98 BAYONET.The knife retains the original Bayonet maker stamp, the bayonet date of manufacture 1888, and some of the bayonets original Regimental markings.
The blade which is very sharp has quite a long blade length of about 18.7 cm, and a blade width of about 2.5 cm
Hilt length of about 10.5 cm.The wooden hilt which has been shaped for a better grip, was probably painted red for quick location in low light, dust, or smoke although most of the original red paint has worn off,
Some rust staining more to one side of the blade but otherwise given its age and the conditions of WW1 front line trenches the knife is in overall nice used good condition
