Colt was contracted to supply 37,500 Springfield Model 1861 rifles to the US Army in 1864. This is one of the .58" calibre Colt made Springfield model 1861 percussion rifled muskets, converted for use as a carbine. It has a 26" barrel dated "1864" at the breech, with eagle stamp on the nipple bolster, and with 2 leaf folding rear sight and block with blade fore sight. The barrel’s rifled bore has staining and residue consistent with age and use. The lock is dated 1864 and marked "U.S./ COLTS PT. F-A MFG CO/ HARTFORD.CT"; It has been contemporarily converted to half stock with ramrod rib & ram rod beneath the barrel, with regulation pattern steel mounts including single barrel band, the butt plate tang is stamped "U.S" (Army).
