Buying  BSA Standard Air Rifles

Licensing

Most air rifles sold in the UK are sub-12ft/lb and do not require a licence for private ownership. Air rifles rated above 12ft/lb require a Firearms Certificate (FAC). Always check the stated power output before purchase, and confirm whether the gun has been tuned, as tuning can take an air rifle over the legal limit.

What to check

For pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) rifles, ask about the condition of the regulator and whether the gun holds air correctly. For spring and gas-ram rifles, ask the seller if you can cock and dry-fire it to check the action for smoothness and any unusual noise. Check the barrel and stock for wear. Confirm the calibre, .177 and .22 are most common, matches any scope or accessories you already own.

What is included

Air rifles are often sold with a scope, silencer, or pump included. Confirm exactly what the listing covers before agreeing a price, as these accessories can represent significant additional value.

Selling Your Air Rifle?

Include the brand, model, calibre, power output, action type (spring, gas-ram or PCP) and condition in your listing. State clearly whether it is sub-12ft/lb or FAC-rated. Photographs of the action, stock and barrel help buyers assess condition quickly.
