This is an excellent original Infantry Officer’s Sword most likely made in France for the U.S. Military during the American Civil War. It has a French form hilt and rapier type blade similar to the U.S. Army model 1840 NCO’s sword (see page 211 of World Swords by Withers) a bulbous brass wire bound handle which is undamaged with all wire tight and intact, brass knuckle bow with urn shaped pommel and correct kidney shaped clamshell guards, one hinged for folding. The fixed clamshell has a riveted brass Eagle device indicating U.S. army use. The 32 ¼” rapier shaped blade with double partial fullers is straight and undamaged and has just staining consistent with age. The ricasso has a small inspection mark (illustrated). The sword measures 38 ½” overall. The sword has its original Brass Mounted Leather Scabbard. The throat mount has a frog locket. The end of the chape is open.
