Description

~ Early British Flintlock Bronze Barrelled Blunderbuss ~

The bronze barrel dates back to around 1680 with the stock from around 1770. The blunderbuss could be considered an early shotgun, and served in similar roles. It was typically issued for guarding prisoners or defending a mail coach. Blunderbusses were also commonly carried by officers on naval warships and by pirates for use in close-quarters boarding actions.

This example is a flintlock model, with a flared barrel, brass engraved trigger guard, a steel trigger and lock.

The trigger mechanism half cocks, cocks and it works with a strong spring.

This fine example is signed on the lockplate Compton.

The top flat of the flared brass barrel is signed Spence and it is struck on the breech with numerous proof marks.

The blunderbuss comes with a full walnut stock and an engraved brass butt plate.

~ Dimensions ~

The barrel is 13 inches (33 cm) long and the overall length of the piece is 29 inches (74 cm).

It weighs 2.74Kg.

~ Condition ~

The piece is in good condition for its age.

The brass has age wear but remains in good condition.

The barrel remains clean inside, free of damage.
