The Haenel Model 33 Junior is one of the most famous and highly collectible vintage military training air rifles ever produced. The "Junior" variant was engineered as a slightly smaller, scaled-down version of the standard ("Senior") Model 33, specifically intended for training teenagers and youths. Manufactured by C.G. Haenel in Suhl, Germany, during the interwar period 1933 until the onset of WW2, it was masterfully designed by legendary firearms engineer Hugo Schmeisser famous for the iconic WW2 Schmeisser Sub Machine Gun. The military appearance was purposely built to mimic the aesthetics of Germany’s standard-issue military service rifle, the Mauser K98k but in smaller form and were most notably used by Nazi Hitler Youth groups for training to teach basic marksmanship, safe gun handling and bolt-action manipulation before moving on to full bore firearms. It features a full-length wooden stock and a Mauser-style wing safety catch at the rear of the bolt. Unlike standard break-barrel spring guns, the Model 33 uses a unique bolt-action cocking system. Pulling the bolt handle upward and backward compresses the internal spring piston. It feeds exclusively from vertical, detachable box magazines holding 6, 8 or 12 rounds. It fires 4.4mm lead round balls (No. 4 lead balls only, not for steel BBs or traditional shaped pellets, as steel will permanently damage its rifled barrel). Because of their direct connection to WW2 history, surviving models are highly sought after by militaria and vintage airgun collectors. Our example is in excellent condition with all original un-damaged metal work and wood. It has a block and blade foresight, adjustable rear sight, ribbed butt & sling swivels fitted with period leather sling. The fore stock has period hand etched initials ‘NPY’ (most likely a previous owner or HJ trainee). The metal work has model and maker detail all illustrated.
