A Guide to Buying Handguns in the UK

Following the 1997 restrictions, the UK handgun market evolved into specific, legal categories. To help you navigate our listings, here is how the different types of handguns fit into UK law:

Long Barrel (LBP) & Revolvers

To be held on a standard Section 1 Firearms Certificate, modern cartridge handguns must meet specific length requirements (usually 60cm overall).

  • Long Barrel Pistols: These are typically .22 rimfire Semi Auto pistols modified with a permanent wrist brace and barrel extension. They are the standard for lightweight gallery rifle competitions.
  • Long Barrel Revolvers: Often found in the Revolver category, these centre-fire guns (like .357 or .44 Mag) feature a similar extension rod at the rear to comply with the law.

Muzzleloaders & Black Powder

The 1997 ban did not apply to muzzle-loading firearms.

  • Muzzleloader: This category features traditional percussion revolvers (like the Colt Navy or Remington 1858). They are Section 1 firearms, widely used for target shooting, and do not require the "long barrel" extensions.

Antiques & Curios

Many of our listings are for historic pieces that are purchased for collection rather than shooting.

  • Single Shot & Deringer: These categories often contain antique "Section 58" firearms. If the calibre is obsolete (no longer commercially available), these can often be owned without a licence as curios or ornaments. Always check the specific listing status.

Checking Listing Status

You may see standard short-barrelled Semi Auto or Revolver listings marked as "Section 5." These are strictly for registered dealers, maritime security, or humane dispatch (slaughtermen/vets). Standard FAC holders cannot purchase these items.

Looking for Air Pistols?

Browse our Air Pistols category for CO2 and PCP handguns that don't require a licence.
