Description

Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 3369. An American Remington Smoot 5 shot .30 calibre Rim-fire Revolver, circa 1873. The barrel top strap engraved "REMINGTON & SONS ILION. N.Y. PAT. W. S. SMOOT. OCT. 21. 1873". Chequered grips. William Sydney Smoot was born in 1845 in Norfolk, Virginia. During the Civil War he was a lieutenant in the First Maryland Infantry as part of the Union. He then spent the end of the war as an ordnance officer at Springfield Armory and resigned from the military in 1870 to begin work at Remington the following year. On October 21st 1873, Smoot was issued Patent Number 143,855, which was awarded for an Improvement in Revolving Fire-Arms. Smoot’s patent was unique for two reasons, the frame, barrel and ejector housing were made in one piece and the revolving recoil shield allowed for the ejector and centre pin to work together. Overall length 7 inches. In good condition with some minor blemishes. Action in good working order. A nice example of a Remington Smoot nineteenth century rim-fire revolver. Ref 3369. This is an obsolete antique item and is sold as a collectors item only. No Licence is required in the United Kingdom.
