RARE, American Civil War Era Model 1840 Mounted Light Artillery Trooper’s Sword & Scabbard. Sn 14894:23 - 14894:23

The design of these swords was based on the French Model 1829 Artillery Trooper’s sword (see page 211 of World Swords by Withers). These swords are rare as they were produced in far fewer numbers than the infantry and cavalry due to the relatively smaller size of the artillery Regiments. This sword was probably manufactured in either France or Germany and imported into North America during the early part of the Civil War when the home nations could not produce enough swords for their own troops. This is a very good, original example of the Model 1840 sword complete with original scabbard. It has the correct 31 ¾” long curved and fullered sabre blade and it is 37 ½” overall. The blade has some small nicks only visible on close inspection and areas of staining but no rust all consistent with age and service use. The sword does not have any visible manufacturer, date, or inspection marks. It has the correct plain brass knuckle guard & brass pommel cap. Its leather bound wood grip is undamaged and has its original brass wire binding which is intact and tight. The sword is complete with its original steel scabbard with 2 original hanging rings and small shoe. The scabbard has some small dents consistent with age and use.
