Designed in Czechoslovakia shortly after the First World War and manufactured from 1924 to 1942, the vz. 24 was developed from the proven Mauser Gewehr 98 action, sharing its bolt design while offering a more manageable 590 mm barrel. It served as the standard Czechoslovak service rifle of the interwar period and saw action across multiple theatres, including the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. Following the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, production continued for the Wehrmacht, where the rifle was designated Gewehr 24(t). Approximately 762,000 were produced for the Czechoslovak army alone, with a further 330,000 manufactured for German forces — giving this pattern of rifle a wide and well-documented service history across Europe and beyond.
