A RARE .75”, PATTERN 1769 SHORT LAND FLINTLOCK MUSKET MARKED TO B COMPANT THE ROYALFUSILIERS, 42” barrel struck with the kings proofs at the breech and engraved “ROYAL FUSILIERS”,borderline engraved pattern 1755 lock, engraved TOWER on the tail and bearing the crown G.R. cypher to the centre, the frizzen spring with trefoil end, early type fiddleback, swan-neck cock. Regulation brass mounted full walnut stock the wrist escutcheon engraved “B /26”, indicating issue to B company gun No 26. The Royal Fusiliers served in the American War of Independence, being sent to Canada in 1773, the bulk of the regiment were captured on the fall of St. John’s. The regiment was reformed in New York in 1777, which is when this musket could have been issued to them. From then until the end of the conflict, the regiment saw extensive action. The musket is in very good condition for its age and
service use, with good stock, quite sharp overall, barrel to a brown patina. Short Land muskets of War of Independence period are exceptionally rare.
