BREAKING: UK Government Confirms Silencer Deregulation

There’s some important and welcome news for UK gun owners: the government has officially agreed to deregulate sound moderators (also known as silencers).

That means you’ll soon be able to buy and own a moderator without needing it listed on your firearms certificate. No extra paperwork. No waiting for approval. Just common sense.

What’s Changing?

Up until now, moderators were classed as Section 1 firearms components, meaning you needed a specific slot on your certificate to own one, even though they’re simply used to reduce noise and protect your hearing.

In effect, this proposed change to legislation means that sound moderators for Section 1 firearms will no longer need to be separately listed as firearms in their own right. This means that transactions of sound moderators will not be subject to the variation procedure nor will the vendor and buyer have to inform the police about any transaction. The response lays out that sound moderators pose no danger in themselves to public safety and crucially that this proposal would not increase risk to public safety. Thanks to campaigning by organisations like the Countryside Alliance, that’s finally changing.

What This Means for You

If you’re a shooter whether you’re out on the range or in the field this change is a big win:

✅ Less hassle: No more variation requests or delays.
✅ Better access: You can buy a moderator without needing a separate permission.
✅ More comfort: Less noise, better hearing protection, less disturbance to others.

It’s a move that aligns the UK more closely with other countries where moderators are treated as standard kit not something to restrict.

When Does This Start?

We’re still waiting on the exact date the change comes into effect, but it’s been confirmed by DEFRA and accepted by the Home Office. The moment it’s in place, we’ll update you and the moderators section on Gunstar will be ready for it.

Final Thoughts

At Gunstar, we know most shooters are responsible, safety-conscious and just want to enjoy their sport without unnecessary barriers. This change is a step in the right direction and one that benefits everyone, from pest controllers to deer stalkers to recreational shooters.
