Before the passing of the Metropolitan Police Act 1829, law enforcement among the general population in England was carried out by unpaid parish constables who were elected, and later appointed by the local justice of the peace. During the late 18th and early 19th century, the Industrial Revolution witnessed an exponential expansion in London's size and economic importance. It became clear that the locally maintained system of volunteer constables and "watchmen" was disorganised and inefficient in the deterrence, detection and prevention of crime. This pre: 1953 example with Kings (GeorgeVI) face plate is in very good condition. The furniture is secure and undamaged. The original chin strap is in place, as is the leather liner.
