Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK, visit our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref no 7867. This is one of the more rarely encountered U.S. percussion revolvers carried during the American Civil War. The Joslyn Army revolver is a .44- cal, 5 shot, side-hammer, single action percussion revolver. Only about 3,000 Joslyn revolvers were ever manufactured. The revolver has a US Patent #20160, which was issued to Benjamin F Joslyn on May 4, 1858. With the coming of the Civil War and the US Ordnance Department finding itself without enough military revolvers, the US Government placed an order with Bruff Brothers of New York (Joslyn’s sales agent) for 225 revolvers. This order was placed at the end of 1861. Over the next few months the government ordered an additional 875 revolvers, bringing official US military purchases to 1,100 revolvers. These early guns are very scarce and have military martial markings and inspectors marks. We believe this to be one of those early revolvers although no martial markings are still visible, it does have a US Govt. inspectors mark of a letter "A" under the frame just in front of the trigger guard. The top of the barrel is marked in two lines, now very faint but still readable "B. F. JOSLYN PAT.d MAY 4th 1856". The pistol shows a mottled brown patina, some light scattered patches of minor pitting. Two-piece checkered wooden grips held on by screws. The coarse checkering shows some wear and the grips show handling marks, bumps and dings from use. Ref 7867.
