An excellent original German WW1 Mauser 98/05 'Butcher Bayonet'. The bayonet has 9 groove wooden grips which are secured with two screw bolts. It has a push button spring release which operates as it should. The crossguard has no muzzle ring. The clean single edged steel blade has a maker's stamp on the ricasso "Simson & Co Suhl". The blade measures 14 1/4" in length, it gradually widens from being 1" wide at the ricasso to just over 1 1/4" wide at it's widest point. The back edge of the blade is stamped with a 1915, '15' Imperial inspection mark. The pommel has 3 Imperial Inspection marks. It's original black painted metal scabbard is excellent and undamaged. The bayonet is complete with a well made later leather frog with all rivets and stitching intact. The rear of the frog is faintly impressed '1916' with unreadable letters.
