1897 Dated, 1888 Pattern, Mark 1 Type 2 Wilkinson, Lee Metford Bayonet To the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Scabbard and C1909 War Dept Altered MK II General Service Buff Leather Frog. Sn 8084.
The Enfield, Lee Metford, 1888 Mark 1 Type 2 Bayonet was manufactured for the British .303 calibre Enfield, Lee Metford Rifle which were issued to British and allied forces during the Boer War and WW1. The Bayonet blade which is in good clean condition is 12" in length, double edged and unfullered with a medial ridge running from the ricasso to the blade tip. The ricasso of the blade is crisply stamped by the manufacturer 'Wilkinson London' with Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & '1 '97' (Jan 1897) date. The reverse is stamped with War Dept arrow and inspection mark. It's wood grips are undamaged and stamped 'D13 29'. The Pommel is stamped 'M' above '4.A & S.H.' to the 4th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders with weapon number '581'. This nice condition Bayonet comes complete with excellent leather, steel mounted scabbard and buff leather General Service Mk II Frog with 4 rivets at the belt loop and retaining strap with buckle, correctly altered according to War Dept instructions to also accomodate P1907 Bayonets with hook quillon, under order 'LoC 14530 11th Feb 1909 & LoC 15009 22nd March 1910' (see page 24 and 25 of Bayonet Belt frogs Part 1 By Carter). The frog is also in excellent condition and has all stitching intact. The rear of the frog has contemporary unreadable letters.
