Description

Victorian & WW1 Era British WD Home Service Pattern, 1st Battalion Yorkshire Volunteers Blue Cloth Helmet With Spike Top Mount. Sn 13008 - 13008

In 1859 England expected to be invaded by France and a scare swept the country, exposing the inability of the small peacetime Regular Army to defend Great Britain as well as the vast colonial Empire. The widespread popular demand for additional volunteer forces led to the formation of Corps of Volunteers. This is an excellent, Victorian Other Ranks spike topped Home Service Pattern blue cloth helmet to the 1st Battalion Yorkshire Volunteers. It has a white metal cross piece, spike top and rose bosses supporting a leather backed link chin chain. The front of the helmet bears the impressive Victorian Regiment white metal helmet plate. The helmet plate is original with correct lug mounts. The helmet is complete with leather sweatband. The inside of the helmet has ink stamps ‘BBR 10238’ and date ‘7 14’ (July 1914), it also has War Dept ‘WD with arrow’ ink stamp with ‘4 1913’ date (April 1913) and number ‘6843’. There is also a small paper manufacturer’s label ‘J. Compton & Sons Ltd’ with size ‘6 5/8’. This helmet was most likely initially made in the transition between the reign of Queen Victoria and King Edward C1902 when for a short time it was common practice for Victorian helmet plates already in stock to be mounted on helmets made just after the death of Queen Victoria. Price includes UK delivery. Sn 13008
