William Morton & Sons Sheffield were first listed in directories in 1876 at the old Rockingham Works 175 Rockingham Street, Sheffield as makers of pocket knives and sports knives (see page 231 of the Sheffield Knife Book by Tweedale). This is an impressive original Victorian Bowie knife made by Mortons of Sheffield. The heavy polished steel Bowie blade is 10” long, 2” broad at its widest and 8mm thick. The knife measures 15” overall length. The blade is inscribed on one side ‘Mortons Of Sheffield Knife Makers’ together with pistol and gunsmoke cloud motif & wording ‘A Kentuckian –Bold In Battle Honorable In Peace’. The back of the blade has hand tooled scalloped decoration. The knife has a tooled brass cross guard and thick Stag horn scales laid on brass plates with brass pommel sections. The scales are secured by 5 brass pins. The Bowie comes with a mint, quality, bespoke, Saddler hand made, thick black leather scabbard with integral belt loop which we have had made for this impressive Bowie.
