Made by Webley & Scott in Birmingham between 1935 and 1939 just prior to WW2. These pistols replaced the earlier straight wood grip Mark 1 pistols which were produced from 1924 to approximately serial number 50,000 in 1935. The ‘slant grip’ example, as this is, was produced until approximately serial number 65000 and up to 1939. So its likely that only approximately 15,000 or so of these Pre War ‘slant grip’ models were made in total. This particular pistols serial number is 62642 so it was produced late in the limited production run.
This pistol is in excellent original condition with its blueing a deep black colour showing little sign of wear to its finish. The black grips are undamaged. The stamping’s are all very crisp and clear detailing, on the left side, ‘Webley Air Pistol Mark 1 Made in England’ and on the left ‘Webley & Scott Ltd Birmingham’ with various patent dates further along the cylinder. On the cylinder breech screw to the rear is stamped ‘Not To Be Removed (This wasn’t introduced until serial number 55265) On the left of the barrel pivot is also stamped ‘MK1 .177’. So this pistol was sold just prior to the outbreak of WW2.
The pistol cocks and fires with no issues and really is an excellent example and is the best we’ve seen.
The pistol also comes with its very rare and original cardboard packaging box detailing ‘The Webley Air Pistol Webley & Scott,Limited Weaman Street, Birmingham’ .The lid is really in very good condition all complete and to have survived all this time is quite incredible. On the lid is a stick on paper label detailing the retailer of the pistol at the time namely John Moore(Sports) Ltd, 13, Argyle Street, Bath. Interestingly this company is still trading today from the same street in Bath. The Instructions for the pistol are pasted on the inside of the lid. The base is also complete too. Inside is a very rare and original paper envelope of .177 Calibre ‘Webley Special Pellets’ a rare pamphlet titled ‘Unrivalled Accuracy with the Webley Air Pistol webley & Scott Ltd Weaman Street Birmingham 4’ and dated January 1939. Also included is a webley & Scott Price list dated April 1938. There are also a leather breech seal washer and leather piston washer which were supplied with the pistol from new.
An excellent example of this quite scarce pre WW2 manufacted Air Pistol
