On Auction : A very nice original leather box, Mortimer & Son (Gun and riffle Makers), 86 George street, Edinburgh with the original label. Box size: 28 x 25 x 6.5 cm Magnificent pair of percussion pistols in very good working condition with a barrel that unscrews (very rare and sought after) dating from circa 1800. Magnificent silver thread engraving on the butts. The walnut wood is healthy and very clean. With accessories: copper black powder flask, black powder measure, ball mould for this calibre, box with primer from that time (see photos for more details).Total weight approximately 6 kg.______________________The Mortimer gun-maker empire was founded by the sons of Samuel Mortimer of London, a refueller - owner of a licensed liquor company. The three sons became full-fledged gunsmiths.Harvey Walkate Mortimer was born in 1753, and the second son, Thomas in 1755. They joined and traded under the name HW Mortimer and T. Mortimer from 1800 to 1807, and then under the name Thomas Mortimer & Son from 1807 to 1824. The third son, Jackson Mortimer, born in 1762, was apprenticed to Thomas Allport, a gunsmith, in Birmingham. He partnered with his son-in-law, John Blanch, as Mortimer and Blanch from 1811 to 1812, and then as Jackson, Mortimer and Son. He was appointed an extraordinary gunsmith to the Prince of Wales in 1871.Later, they acquired Joseph Harkom's former established business, and in 1938, Mortimer & Son merged with John Dickson & Son....Read full description
