Are You Eligible for a Gun Licence in the UK? (FAC & SGC Rules Explained)
Thinking about applying for a firearm or shotgun certificate? Here's what makes you eligible.
UK firearms law is clear: only people who meet strict legal, safety and character requirements are allowed to own guns. Whether you're applying for a Firearm Certificate (FAC) or Shotgun Certificate (SGC), the police must be satisfied that you're fit to own a gun, and won’t pose a danger to the public or yourself.
Here’s a breakdown of who can apply, what the police will check, and common reasons people are refused:
Who Can Legally Own a Gun in the UK?
You may be eligible to apply for a gun licence if you:
- Are aged 18 or over
- Are not legally prohibited (e.g. due to past criminal convictions)
- Can provide good reason for each firearm (FAC only)
- Have suitable and secure storage in place
- Can offer two referees (for FAC) or one (for SGC)
- Pass a background check with no serious concerns
Who Cannot Get a Gun Licence?
You are likely to be refused or disqualified if:
- You have a serious criminal record, especially involving violence or firearms
- You have served a prison sentence of over 3 months (especially over 3 years)
- You are the subject of a restraining order, suspended sentence, or pending prosecution
- You have a history of mental illness or substance misuse that raises safety concerns
- You fail to demonstrate secure gun storage
- You live with someone who is a prohibited person
Note: Each application is reviewed individually. A minor conviction may not automatically prevent you from applying, but it must be disclosed.
What About Mental Health?
Police forces are required to consider your mental health as part of the application process. You will be asked to:
- Disclose any recent or ongoing mental health conditions
- Give permission for your GP to share relevant medical information
Being honest is essential. Many people with managed conditions (e.g. depression, anxiety) are approved, but hiding details can result in refusal or revocation.
What Do the Police Actually Check?
During your application, expect the police to:
- Run criminal background checks
- Interview you (in person or by phone)
- Speak to your referees (for FAC or SGC)
- Conduct a home visit to inspect your gun cabinet or proposed storage area
- Contact your GP to confirm your medical history
Can I Apply If I Don't Own Land or Belong to a Club?
Yes, but you’ll need to show a valid reason for owning a firearm. For example:
- A booking at a rifle range or clay ground
- A written letter from a landowner granting permission to shoot
- An intent to join a target shooting club
For shotguns, you don’t need to justify ownership unless the police believe there’s a reason to refuse.
