This hand grenade was introduced in late 1916 as a non-persistent, non-lethal, lachrymatory (tear gas) grenade for clearing dugouts in trench warfare and differed from normal grenades in that it did not have an explosive filling. No. 28 grenades are packed 12 in a wooden box with space for a tin box containing 12 bursters. This mark II grenade consists of a spherical cast iron ball which has cast into it No 28 II FALCO (Falkirk Iron Company Limited of Scotland) 8.18 (August 1918 date) with a screw in cast iron burster/fuse holder. The burster has its original brass fuse and safety cap assembly, the cap being held on by a brass split pin. The grenade retains most of its original red painted finish. See pages 92 and 93 of Grenade, British and Commonwealth hand and rifle grenades by Rick Landers. The price for this rare British WW1 grenade includes UK delivery and no licence is required to possess this inert grenade in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 20036
