The New Land Pattern pistol, first approved in 1796 and mass-produced by 1802. Originally adapted from a design created for the East India Company; the New land Cavalry Pistol provided one model of pistol for all of Britain's cavalry and units such as the Royal Horse Artillery
The pistol has the early rounded butt rather than the later flattened style, and a ring neck cock The lock plate is clearly engraved Manton and has some worn proof-marks on the barrel. The lock, as you would expect from a Manton, is crisp and holds both half and full cock easily
This is a private purchase pistol made by the well known gunsmith Joseph Manton. At the Time Manton was a well known gunsmith making around 100 guns annually including both cased duelling sets as well as fowling pieces
