Create my profile now!John Probin was a Birmingham based gunsmith recorded as having premises at Steelhouse lane 1802-1806, 28 Bull Street 1807-1813 & More Street 1814-1817, see page 312 of British Gunmakers Vol.2 by Brown (other gun makers named J. Probin are recorded as working in London and the Provinces but John Probin of Birmingham is the only one working firmly in the flintlock era, the others worked in the percussion era). This is a quality made over & under, tap action flintlock traveling pistol by John Probin. It's round steel screw off barrels are just over 2 ¾” in length (8 ¼” overall). The smooth bores have staining and residue consistent with age and use (the muzzle of each barrel are slotted for tool to assist removal, we do not have the tool). The underside of the action has black powder proofs. The underside of the lower barrel is numbered ‘1’, there is no visible number on the top barrel but it may be visible when barrel removed. Its heavy steel frame is nicely engraved on both sides with banners and foliate decoration. On the left side the banner is signed ‘J. Probin' and the right ‘London’. The trigger guard is engraved with a foliate design. It has a steel cock with a flint. The pistol cocks and dry fires crisply and the tap action operated by a lever on the left side of the pan functions firmly. The pistol's bag shaped walnut grip is undamaged and inlaid with intricate silver wire decoration. It is also inlaid with void silver escutcheon. The price for this desirable pistol includes UK delivery. NB as an antique flintlock pistol no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display.
