An exceptionally rare English Brass Barrelled Flintlock pistol with a very interesting naval inscription to the barrel. Circa 1780-1800. The engraving reads "GIVEN IN MEMORY OF CAPT R. R. BURGES WHO WAS KILLED ON BOARD H. M. SHIP ARDENT IN ACTION WITH THE DUTCH FLEET OCT 11TH 1797. The 8 inch brass barrel stamped with two London proof marks. Brass trigger guard. The lock with an indistinct mark. Overall length 13.5 inches. In good working order and well used condition.

    There is a very large monument to Captain Burges at St Paul's Cathedral in London that was erected in 1802 that reads ; TO THE MEMORY/OF/RICHARD RUNDLE BURGES ESQUIRE/COMMANDING HIS MAJESTY'S SHIP THE ARDENT/WHO FELL IN THE XLIIID YEAR OF HIS AGE/WHILE BRAVELY SUPPORTING THE HONOUR/OF THE BRITISH FLAG/IN A DARING AND SUCCESSFUL ATTTEMPT TO BREAK THE ENEMY'S LINE/NEAR/CAMPERDOWN/ON THE ELEVENTH OF OCTOBER/MDCCXCVII/HIS SKILL COOLNESS AND INTREPIDITY EMINENTLY CONTRIBUTED/TO A VICTORY/EQUALLY ADVANTAGEOUS AND GLORIOUS TO HIS COUNTRY/THAT GRATEFUL COUNTRY/BY THE UNANIMOUS ACT OF HER LEGISLATURE/ENROLLS HIS NAME/HIGH IN THE LIST OF THOSE HEROES/WHO UNDER THE BLESSING OF PROVIDENCE/HAVE ESTABLISHED AND MAINTAINED HER NAVAL SUPERIORITY/AND HER EXALTED RANK AMONG NATIONS' Ref 9917.This is an obsolete antique pistol and is sold as a collectors item only.
