Probably circa 1800- 1830. A wooden rattle with the original uncleaned finish. It measures approx 11 inch with the handle. The first recognised police force in England was created in London in by Sir Robert Peel. The Peelers, as they were known dressed in blue tail coats and top hats and were issued with a wooden truncheon, a pair of handcuffs and a wooden rattle to raise the alarm. (I am not sure that would be enough to put the fear of God into some of the criminals we have around today). The Rattle, was used as both a tool to communicate with other officers to call for help but in the meantime while fighting off a violent offender, it could be turned around in the hand and used as an impact weapon to help fight off danger. Some dings and scratches during it's working life, otherwise in good condition. A rare item. Ref 3988.
