First adopted in 1936 by France and intended to replace the Berthier and Lebel series of service rifles, it saw service long past the World War II period. It was manufactured by Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS), one of several Government owned arms factories in France. Because production started late in 1937, not enough MAS-36 rifles were available to arm the French infantry when the war broke out in September 1939. Mass production finally caught up after World War II and MAS-36 rifles became widely used in service during the First Indochina War, the Algerian War and the Suez Crisis. Production ceased in 1952. This is an original French M-36 rifle. The rifle measures 40 ½” overall with a 23" barrel. It has all original wood and metal work. The wood has just the light bumps and bruises to be expected. It has a hinged forward sling ring and the stock is fitted with sling bar fitted with period leather sling. It has a steel butt plate, shrouded fore sight and adjustable rear sliding graduated peep sight. The rifle has the correct removable cruciform bayonet concealed under the muzzle. The bayonet with 11 ¼” long blade (15” overall) is removed for use by depression of a lever on the blade shank. The bayonet is then slotted into the vacant bayonet hole and retained in place by a sprung clip. To remove the bayonet from the rifle a second lever on the shank is depressed. The rifle is serial number 76647 and it has other un-matching numbers. The action is stamped 'MAS Mle 1936'. Deactivated to early UK specification in 1994 the rifle cocks and dry fires. The price for this scarce rifle includes deactivation certificate & UK delivery. Sn 21266:12.
