BladesSwords1861 Dated US Cavalry Sword
~ 1861 Dated US Cavalry Sword ~
Here we have an interesting sword, it is a US Model of cavalry sword that appears to have elements from both the 1840 and 1860 model, the blade profile is later but the grip appears to be earlier.
This is to be expected with swords of the period where the Union government were procuring parts from around the country in a hurry to supply soldiers going to the front.
The sword is a three bar hilt inspired by the French 1821 light cavalry sword. The guard is made of brass with a ribbed wooden grip (this would have originally been leather wrapped) with a steel blade and a plated steel scabbard.
The sword is marked only with 1861 which leads me to believe that other manufacturers markings have either rubbed off due to age and friction or this sword was produced in a limited timeframe and only the date was stamped on there.
~ Dimensions ~
The sword is 42 inches long.
The blade is 35 inches long.
The sword weighs
~ Condition ~
The sword has some damage from surface rust on the scabbard and is missing the organic components of the grip material the sword is in surprisingly good condition.
