William Schermuly was a seaman & inventor born in 1857 of Dutch origin. He was famous for his invention of sea rescue, line throwing apparatus including rockets and flare pistols. This is an excellent condition British WW1 era brass Trench flare pistol. It has its original undamaged wood grips. The pistol is serial number '72986' which is stamped on the frame and barrel block. The left side is stamped 'Schermuly's' Patent’. The pistol has 4" barrel. Deactivated to UK specification in 2022, the pistol breaks open as it should and it cocks and dry fires.
