~ C1550 Italian Rapier By Master "S" Of Caino ~
Here we have an absolutely incredible piece, a 16th century rapier of impressive proportions. This fantastic piece dates from the golden age of rapier fencing when this was not only a gentleman's sidearm and fighting weapon but also a symbol of his status and prestige. This one being a particular example of a prestigious weapon since the guard retains a large amount of gilt.
It's also interesting to note that this is a civilian weapon that occasionally made it onto the battlefield many in a militarised form but also in its base form as a thinner civilian weapon famous not only as a duelling or military weapon and status symbol but also used in Italian gang warfare by groups of young wealthy men who enjoyed the lifestyle.
This sword bears the markings of Italian bladesmith occasionally called Pietro Caino or Master S of Caino, the town in Northern Italy and is easily recognisable by the jumble of letters in the fuller. The sword itself is made of gilt iron, steel, what appears to be silver or steel wire on the grip that would be hiding a wooden core.
