Create my profile now! This is a nice dated ‘1906’ Seitengewehr M1898 quillback bayonet for the Mauser 1898 rifle which was the principal arm of the German army in W.W.1.The M98 Infantry bayonet had a long thin quillbacked blade, and differed from the earlier bayonets by the omission of the muzzle ring, and having a semi-circular hole cut out from the steel pommel to allow the passage of the cleaning rod. The Model 1898 Bayonet was the Imperial German response to the French 1886 Lebel narrow bladed bayonet. The bayonet has a 20 ½” pipe back blade dated ‘06’ above crown (1906) with swell point tip and a central fuller, a steel crossguard with upswept quillon and grooved slab wood grips. The steel pommel release button functions correctly. The scabbard is a steel mounted black leather version with minor dents but no damage, and the stitching is intact. The frog is the correct version and is in equally good condition with only minor age related wear. See The Bayonets Book by John Watts and Peter White page 114 & 119 item No 256. The price includes UK delivery. BAYO 2625.
