Description

INERT DEACTIVATED. This is an unfired British 4.5 inch QF (Quick Firing) howitzer (114x86R) high explosive round. The round was fired by the 4.5 inch howitzer and consists of a separately loaded projectile and a short brass cartridge case sealing the breach. The high explosive projectile is fitted with a No 101 mark II percussion fuse and is marked NO101 11 a bird monogram followed by H 9/17 (July 1917) LOT. The projectile Is stamped on the base 4.5 HR 2 2-17 (February 1917) H over DL 2 L5 . The cartridge case is stamped 4.5IN HOWR CF (Cordite Full Charge) 1917 (1917 date) SOT 29 10 MCM within a monogram. The earlier mark 1 gun cartridge case was slightly shorter but in 1917 the cartridge case was lengthened slightly together with the howitzers breech modified to prevent the breech of the gun from cracking. The brass cartridge case is fitted with a No.1 Mark 3 primer and is stamped No. 1 III 10-17 (October 1917 date) F.3 C.H – BT.
