This badge was instituted for the crews of armoured vehicles other than tanks, which comprised of self-propelled gunners and the like, the Panzergrenadier personnel and the support units including medical personnel who were engaged in helping the battlefield wounded. It was in all respects the same as the silver award, and was introduced on 1st June 1940. See page 167 of Combat Medals of the third Reich by Christopher Ailsby for reference.
