The criteria for the award were; to have completed three operational sorties, to have been wounded during an operational sortie, even if it was his first, if the ship had sunk due to enemy action, for exemplary conduct in the execution of his duties over a six month period, to have completed a specially dangerous mission in a mined area and a mission comprised of 25 days or more on escort duty.
