Manufactured in 1859. Marked on the 7.5 inch barrel ADDRESS SAM L COLT NEW-YORK CITY. The serial numbers (all matching except the wedge) indicate that this is a Third model Colt dragoon revolver manufactured in 1859. Colts patent stamped of the left side of the frame. Overall length approx 14 inches. Good crisp action. Production of these percussion revolvers for Colt's Manufacturing company was undertaken by Eli Whitney Jr., son of mechanical genius Eli Whitney of Cotton Gin fame. Both the senior and junior Whitneys made their fair share of contributions to the American industrial revolution. Production of the new dragoon revolvers started at the Whitneyville factory in Hamden, Connecticut in 1848. 10,700 Colt third model dragoon revolver where manufactured and Government records show an order for 8,390 Dragoon revolvers of this particular model. Some dings and scratches received during it's life in service. A true authentic Colt Dragoon revolver which would have almost certainly been carried during the period of the American Civil War.
