Description

Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 7865. A fine English .36 calibre Percussion 6 shot Pepperbox revolver, complete in its original carrying case with accessories. Circa 1845. The pepperbox was invented around the 1830s and was intended for civilian use, but military officers often made private purchases for their own use. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (1833-1864) was a U.S. Army officer and later a Major General and cavalry commander for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861-65). In 1857 he was shot in the chest at point blank range with a pepper-box by a Cheyenne warrior, Stuart survived probably due rumour has it, to a very weak powder charge. Decorative engraved side plates, trigger guard, bar hammer and butt cap. Finely chequered wooden grips. 3 inch barrels. The pistol contained in its original wooden carrying case with its original faded red lining, containing a copper powder flask, steel bullet mold, oil bottle, screw driver and percussion cap tin. Overall length of the pistol 8 inches. The mahogany case fitted with brass corners and measures 10 X 7 inches. The case partitions are loose. A good example of an English percussion pepper-box revolver in its original case retaining much of its original blued finish. Ref 7865.
