Remington Danish Remington Rolling Block Single Shot 11 mm Rifle

A fine example of the Danish M1867/96 Remington rolling block, chambered in the distinctive 11.7 x 51.6 mm cartridge, presented here in very good overall condition with an excellent bore and period target sights correctly fitted.

Denmark was among the first nations to adopt the Remington rolling block, licensing the design in 1867 following urgent demand for a proven breech-loading arm. The Royal Danish Army initially procured 40,000 rifles and 1,800 carbines from Remington in the United States, with a further 31,551 rifles subsequently manufactured at the government arsenal in Copenhagen. Originally chambered for a rimfire cartridge, the rifles were converted to centrefire in 1896 at the same time as withdrawal from front-line infantry service, after which they were issued to coast and fortress artillery units. The conversion also saw a new, longer rear ladder sight fitted to the rifles.

The stock carries a commemorative plaque reading "Horbelev parish and surrounding area celebrates its 100th anniversary." Horbelev is a small rural village on the Danish island of Falster, whose church dates from around 1200 and which served as an agricultural and civic centre for northeast Falster. The plaque strongly suggests this rifle was presented as a prize or commemorative piece by a local shooting club or parish association — a well-established tradition in 19th-century rural Denmark — lending the piece a pleasing layer of documented local provenance that sets it apart from standard military surplus examples.
