This is an original 1895/97 British Infantry officer’s presentation sword. These swords were a great improvement on previous patterns with better protection to the hand through its ¾ basket hilt (see page 179 of World Swords by Withers & pages 165-167 of Swords of the British Army by Robson). The sword has a 32 ½” single edged blade with partial fullers. The ricasso has the ordnance acceptance ‘proof’ inlaid roundel. The ricasso is marked by the maker ‘Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London’ together with Royal appointment. Both sides of the blade have etched panels featuring foliate devices, the Queen’s crown & Royal Cypher ‘VR’ (Victoria Rex). The sine of the blade ins numbered 38066 and ‘4 Border 9 Presented By Lt Col A B Clayton’ (The Border Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army, which was formed in 1881 under the Childers Reforms by the amalgamation of the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot and the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot). It has the correct ¾ bowl guard voided with foliate design and ‘Queen’s Crown VR’. The hilt has leather cord & acorn knot. It has the correct fish skin grip with wire binding which is tight and intact. The sword is complete with its brass mounted wood scabbard bound with undamaged leather field service cover and leather belt tab. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 19359
