A RARE .451” TYPE 1, MODELO 1867 PORTUGUESE ISSUE WESTLEY RICHARDS MONKEY TAIL

PISTOL TO THE QUEENS LANCER’S, 9” Birmingham proofed barrel, with W. Richards octagonal

rifling, the action lever marked “Westley Richards Patent”, the lockplate stamped with the makers

name “Westley Richards” dated 1867 in a triangle on the tail. Brass mounted full walnut stock,

the buttcap marked “R.2. / E / 5” indicating issue to the 2nd or Queens Lancers, the pistol is

complete with its original rod. In 1866 Portugal contracted with W. Richards for the supply of 8000

Monkey Tail rifles, 2000 carbines and 1000 pistols, of these pistols approx.. 500, the 1st type were

supplied with a rammer and issued to the Queens Lancers, the 2nd type were made with no

provision for a rammer and issued to the 1st or Kings Lancers. The pistol is in very good condition, quite sharp stock, the barrel to a blue patina with low serial number No 79.
