Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 1238. A very good Presentation cavalry sword with a superb blued and gilt blade, circa 1804-05. A British 1796 pattern Light Cavalry sabre of the type carried at the Battle of Waterloo, and throughout the Napoleonic campaigns. Manufactured by REDDELL & BATE Birmingham and stamped with their name on the back edge of blade. Complete with it's original steel scabbard with two hanging rings. Original wooden grip, the grip wire binding missing. The scabbard engraved with a presentation inscription that reads - "Presented by Major Wickham, commanding officer of the F. & E. M. V. C. (Frome & East Mendip Volunteer cavalry) to Mr. S. Middleton for excellence in sword exercise and horsemanship". The date is unclear but would have been right in the middle of the Napoleonic wars circa 1804-05. This sword has a superbly decorated blued and gilt blade and would make a fine addition to any Napoleonic collection. Very good condition. Overall length 39 inches. Ref 1238. (Ex Richard Dellar collection)

    ------------------------------
note; James Anthony Wickham (1769-1854) was an a solicitor in Frome, Somerset. In 1797 he raised the Frome Selwood Volunteers, the first of several troops that would eventually become the North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry. The Frome troop amalgamated with the East Mendip Volunteers in 1804 to become the Frome & East Mendip Volunteer Cavalry commanded by Major Wickham. Stephen Middleton, who was proprietor of the Angel Inn in Frome was in the muster rolls at that time. In 1814, all of the local troops in north Somerset (including the Bath Light Horse Volunteers - Captain King's sword is illustrated on plate 21 in the very fine book by Richard Dellar - "The British Cavalry Sword 1788-1912) amalgamated to form the North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry with James Wickham as its first lieutenant-colonel. He retired in 1830 and could rightfully be called the father of the regiment. If you wish to purchase this item please visit our website andrewbottomley.com where you can pay by credit/debit card or bank transfer at no extra charge.
